The Lesson My Immigration Journey Taught Me About Business Growth

For me, that dream was living in Canada. On my first visit in the early 2000s, I fell in love with the country and promised myself I would live here someday. But for years, it remained just that—a dream without a real plan.

The Dream vs. The Reality: A Journey of Trial and Error

An early attempt to move here with a former partner fell apart, a painful lesson that a dream isn't truly yours until you build a path to it.

Years later, I remarried. In a quiet conversation about our goals, my husband mentioned he dreamed of gaining work experience outside the Dominican Republic. My own dream of Canada resurfaced, and this time, it wasn't just mine—it became a shared mission. We aligned our goals and our journey began.

Together, we mapped out a plan. We researched every program, filled out every form, and in 2017, submitted our first application for permanent residency on our own.

A year later: Rejected.

The reason was a technicality—they couldn't confirm one of our work experiences. We were devastated. We had done everything we were supposed to do, and still, the door didn’t open. We started to doubt not just the path, but the dream itself.
